My approach to building the youth is quite simple: 

Train their bodies, shape their movements, and build their vision.

What this means, is that building a strong person happens from the ground, up.  Along with strength should be skill.  But with the youth, vision--the ability to see is to be able to recognize when a situation degrades.  I want my kids to be able to know when a situation is heading south, well before it gets there.  So that they don't have to be there when it does.
